How an AntiVirus Product Works

An anti virus program watches for viruses, catches them before they execute, and kills them. It works by comparing certain data activity and known virus file patterns against it’s database of known virus definitions. When it finds a virus, it kills or disables it based on instruction supplied in it’s database. Because anti virus software is only as good as it’s last database update, antivirus definitions must be downloaded and installed on a regular basis (preferably daily).
Choosing an Anti Virus Program
There are many good antivirus applications on the market today, and many of them are free. All basically work the same way, but some are more accurate at detecting and removing viruses (assuming the virus definitions are kept updated). Some anti virus products are easier to install, configure and update than others. Some have a lot of advanced configuration options, and some have a pretty simple interface. Some have great technical support, and others do not.
Because computer security is so important these days, our recommended anti virus program is one that comes from either a large computer security company (like Symantec or McAfee – just two examples – there are more), or a highly specialized developer of internet security products (like Grisoft AVG Anti virus, BitDefender, AVG Anti Virus or Bit Defender). Below you will find a summary of great antivirus products to consider as well as links. As long as you stick with tried-and-true anti virus software that has a good track record for accurate virus detection as well as tech support, you’ll be in good hands.

antivirus software included in internet security suites
Many other fine anti virus solutions are available as part of a computer security suite – or internet security suite. Antivirus is packaged with other useful pc security software such as a personal firewall and anti spyware, anti adware software.
